Madis Muul Trio
“Cosmic, tender and deeply immersive.”
— Nenad Georgievski, All About Jazz, 2025
Madis Muul Trio is a Tallinn-based contemporary jazz group led by Estonian pianist and composer Madis Muul, with Raimond Mägi on double bass and Karl-Juhan Laanesaar on drums.
“In a way I write film music. I have scenes or short films in my head, and I try to describe them in musical language,” says Muul.
His compositions reflect this visual imagination, alongside a longstanding interest in rhythm and its possibilities. More recently, his study of South Indian Carnatic music has opened up further rhythmic ideas, explored in the trio’s 2025 Jazzkaar collaboration with percussionist Giridhar Udupa.
An earlier incarnation of Muul’s trio recorded under the name LUUM. The album The Guide (2022) features Muul, drummer Karl-Juhan Laanesaar and former bassist Andres Alaru, with guest appearances by trumpeter Allan Järve and flautist Markus Anthony Eerman.
